Book Review - A New Earth Becomes Your New Earth
Do you want to know what the essence of life is really about? Are you open to transformation? If you can answer "Yes" to these questions, then A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle is a book for you.
Tolle has emerged in recent years as a non-denominational spiritual beacon, pointing to the core of life from his own eye-opening life experiences. (For more on his life, read The Power of Now). His work is easy to understand and, at points, hard to accept as he doesn't skirt what each of us needs to do. I find his writing courageous and resonant.
The ultimate goal of A New Earth is to help create the critical mass, or tipping point, of awakened beings that alters human consciousness on Earth and changes life as we know it. Without any hidden pretext, Tolle skillfully and boldly reveals what has to happen and how each of us holds part of the solution.
He opens our eyes to the underbelly of a failing society: one possessed by ego-oriented humans who identify with the "voice in the head" as who they are. The voice is that of the ego and its companion, the pain body, which is made up by the human tendency to carry old emotions. It is not the existence of these parts that matters. Instead, what matters more is that humans identify with them as who they are. This identification results in suffering.
He also points to the basic tension of the human existence: that we are formless spirit existing in a world of form. If we are identifying with our ego and pain body, then we can act in ways that tie us to the world of form, such as reaching for outcomes to substantiate our sense of worth, accumulating material things and feeling limited by intelligence, ideas or language.
There is one answer to all dilemmas and suffering: that is to open to the present moment through awareness, choose to be in this moment and realize that you are the formless witnessing presence that observes life. All freedoms come to you from this place. And in each successive moment, you get to choose again to be present.
While many other works point to quantum physics or spirituality and leave many questions unanswered, Tolle leaves no room for doubt or error about what each of us is to do. We are simply to embrace presence, accept what is and enjoy life. He innately recognizes the power and strength within each reader and empowers it with accessible tools that enable each one to practice.
On the downside though, I can sense that what Tolle considers easy or common is quite the opposite for many of his readers. Having practiced from this work and others, it takes considerable focus and attention to reorient habitual thoughts and patterns of being. A valuable enabler of greater success is to affiliate with like-minded practitioners who can share success and buffer any downfalls.
Tolle opens the door wide for anyone willing to walk through it with him. Your willingness to join the journey holds momentous promise for the evolution of humankind.
